On “star-crossed,” Kacey tells the story of two lovers who failed to make their relationship work in spite of attempts to save it. The song—like the whole album—is inspired by Kacey’s past relationship with and divorce from Ruston Kelly.
The title comes from the idea that the positions of the stars dictate the fates of individuals, and is most commonly used when describing “ill-fated lovers.” The phrase is largely attributed to William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.
