Biography

Dokte & Boere got together in 1998 to form what would be one of South Africa’s leading Afrikaans hip hop & rap groups – Kallitz. While writing and producing their own music, Skelm joined them to form a trio a few years later. After gigging extensively in and around the Cape Flats, they were eventually signed to Mothermix Records in 2004.

Kallitz released their debut album ‘Die Ding Ruk Mal’ in 2004 and was voted ‘Album of the Month’ by FHM, reached No 1 on the SA Rock Digest Album Charts and won ‘Best Hip Hop Album’ at the 2005 SABC 2 GMT Music Awards.

Skelm left the group the following year, and Dokte and Boere continued to work on the second album – ‘Dukgesuip’ – and was released in 2006. The album produced three No 1 Hits with ‘Wat Gaan Ons Maak’ featuring Steve Hofmeyr, the Cape Town anthem ‘Kaapse Paatie’ and ‘Suikerbossie’, a hip hop version of the Afrikaans Boeremusiek classic; as well as the popular title track ‘Dukgesuip’.
Kallitz were at this point gigging extensively around South Africa and were one of the most sought after acts at music festivals.

In 2007, the song “Kallitz Innie Plek” was featured in the movie Footskating as well as on the official movie soundtrack album released by EMI Music South Africa.

In 2008 Dokte moved to Johannesburg and Kallitz disappeared off the radar.
Dokte & Boere then decided to try their hand at producing their own projects.
Boere independently produced and released an album called “Die Groot Trek”. Shortly thereafter Dokte produced an album called “Maak Mekaa Sterk”. Near the end of 2008, after almost 2 years apart, Kallitz appeared on stage in Kimberley at the Gariep Festival and brought the house down.

In 2009 Dokte formed his own company called BLM Music.

In mid 2010 Dokte collaborated with DJ Azuhl of Brasse Vannie Kaap on a 16-track mixtape project called “Die Spreekkaame Miekstyp”, which he also made available free to the public. At the same time, Boere continued working with other artists, most notably MC Cole. Dokte was invited to perform at the HipHopKop launch event in Oudtshoorn on 20 November 2010 where Boere again joined him on stage; and they appeared on stage again at the Absa KKNK in April 2011.

Dokte was then selected along with Ready D and Jack Parow as one of the three judges for the first round of the HipHopKop which took place at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town on 18 January 2011, and again at the third round as a final judge at Aardklop in Potchefstroom in September 2011.

Kallitz’s stage performances were seen at Levi’s ‘Rage for the Revolution’ AIDS benefit concert, Maties Rag, Stellenbosch Woordefees, the KKNK in Oudtshoorn, the Cape Town Festival, the Worcester Festival, the Suidoostefees in Cape Town, the Rittelfees in Vredendal, the Cedarberg Festival, Aardklop in Potchefstroom, Gariep Festival in Kimberley, the SABC 2 GMT Awards at the Emperors Palace in Johannesburg, the Barnyard Theatre in Johannesburg, the HipHopKop events and at various school carnivals and festivals, as well as various clubs.
Kallitz were also approached by ATKV to write, compose and record an ATKV jingle rap song in 2006.

Media exposure include ‘Hola’ (Channel O), ‘Unzipped’ and ‘Street Journal’ (SABC 1), eTV News, ‘Pasella’, ‘Morning Live’, ‘Master Magician Wolfgang Riebe’, ‘Jam Sandwich’, ‘Dube on 2’ and ‘Pitstop’ (SABC 2), ‘Dis Hoe Dit Is Met Steve Hofmeyr’ and ‘Kwela’ (kykNET), ‘Hip Hop” (MK), YFM, 5FM, GHFM, KC Radio, RSG, Hype magazine, Huisgenoot, FHM, Rootz, TV Plus, SL Magazine, Beeld, City Press, Die Burger, Die Son, Sondag, Rapport and many others.
