This song is a ballad dedicated to Kanye West’s mom Donda West and was written in 2000. It later appeared in its final version on Kanye’s 2005 album Late Registration.

West debuted the song on Oprah with his mother in the audience. Donda liked it so much she actually made it her ringtone at the time.

Sadly, Donda passed away in 2007 of cosmetic surgery complications, and Kanye understandably broke down in tears attempting to perform this song at his next concert, but not before he had the opportunity to perform the song live for her in their kitchen in Chicago.

On the 10th anniversary of Donda West’s passing on November 10, 2017, a group of Kanye fans organized an event titled “Hey Mama Day”. The event aims to encourage fans to listen to the song with the hope of it reappearing on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s motivations were also to combat the release of Taylor Swift’s album Reputation on the anniversary, which many percieved as an intentional move in the long-standing Swift-West feud.
