Biography

Artist Name: Kevon Thomas

Birth Name: Kevon L. Thomas

Birth Place and Date: Point Fortin, Trinidad. January 7, 1970

Official Bio
Being nearly two feet taller than all the guys his age was a BIG help in getting the attention of those around, whether he was on stage doing ex-tempo (the art of doing free-style calypso), standing in the front row tenor line of his school's steel-band side, or playing Herod the King in the church play.

Kevon Thomas began his life in music and drama as a tot in primary school and has emerged as one of the more inspirational Gospel music ministers to hail from the shores of Trinidad & Tobago.

Kevon has been involved in music in one way or the other for almost 30 years and has represented his country in youth music festivals in Scotland and Miami.

“Protector” is Kevon's solo debut album and he enlists an impressive cast of musical talents to assist him on this project. The Album is produced by Isaac Blackman of Love Circle fame for the JGN record label and features guest appearances by several top local gospel acts. Notable cameos include Gitta Dan on Precious, Marge Blackman-Mohamed who joins Kevon on “The River Of God” and Isaac Blackman and Koen Duncan who spice things up on “Army Of God”. Also doing great work on “Lord I'm Coming Home” is relative new-comer Reisha St. Hilaire.

Currently the JGN label has four main acts namely The LoveCircle, Joel B. and Neilo, Dixie-Ann Hunte and Kevon Thomas - the first act out the gate. Kevon has been associated with the Blackmans and The JGN label for some time now having sung back-up vocals on a number of JGN projects including “To The Ceiling.” So on his solo effort the Blackmans return the favor with Nehilet, Isaac and Marge all assisting on Backgrounds.

Kevon has been actively involved in Jamoo music for almost two years. However, he is no newcomer to the music scene. He has been a member of the champion steel band WoodTrin Steel Orchestra and has also been the leader of The Arouca Youth Choral (AYC) and the Musical Director of Five Rivers Youth Choral.

The lead single off his album is the title track “Protector” and it is already getting great reviews and generous airplay on several popular radio stations. The video can be seen on MTV's Tempo and really adds flavour to the Rise and Shine program.

The album consists 12 beautifully arranged and produced songs done in the Jamoo style, a style of music created by the Late Ras Shorty I, the man also credited as the inventor of Soca music.

So look out for Kevon Thomas and his soulful brand of Jamoo, you will surely be hearing a lot about him in the near future

Exclusive Interview with GospelReggae.com
GR: How did you begin doing music?

Kevon: I began music in primary (prep) school but that was at a preliminary level (you sang because your teachers told you to sing!!). In secondary school however, I got more into calypso and also learned to play the steel-pan (the national instrument of my country, Trinidad & Tobago). When I left school, I got more involved in church (choirs, singing solo and drama groups). Finally, later on, I was introduced to Isaac Blackman when he was doing his 1st CD (In Your Eyes). I did BGVs for him on it, later joined his band “The Love Circle” and the rest, as they say, is history.

GR: Read any good books lately?

Kevon: Yes, actually I just finished reading “Teach me how to Love you” by Thomas Weeks III. This is a GREAT book (which actually took me just 7 hours to read.. I couldn’t put it down!). I recommend this book to EVERY man/woman who has friends, family or a spouse…… that’s everyone!

GR: What Bible character do you most identify yourself with?

Kevon: David. He was a sinner BIGTIME but he was also the only man that God referred to as a man after His own heart!!

GR: Name one thing that fans do not know about you.

Kevon: Don’t think I should be saying this but here goes… I am VERY emotional. A well executed and touching TV AD can make the tears flow…

GR: Name something personal that gives you great satisfaction.

Kevon: Whenever I achieve something with which I didn’t think I had a snowball’s chance in hell.

GR: What has been your lowest moment so far in life?

Kevon: It’s a bit too personal to say and it isn’t over yet but like Paul I’m asking God to either remove it or give me the grace to get through it. I know He will come through for me.

GR: What has been your highest moment?

Kevon: To date, my wedding day and the day of the launch of my debut CD “Protector”!! I believe the only thing to beat these back would be the birth of my first child.

GR: What are the three things you enjoy most about touring? And least?

Kevon: Most – Ministering to people who don’t have a clue what you music sounds like, going to new places & meeting fellow gospel music ministers. Least – Having to leave my wife behind, flying & food that I don’t like.

GR: What is the best audience that you have ever played in front of?

Kevon: To date it would have to be either at the Telesur celebrations in Suriname ’06 or “Kingdom Night” @ the St.Lucia Jazz festival May ’07.

GR: What country would you tour (even if you didn’t get paid to perfom)?

Kevon: The continent of AFRICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Also Holland… have always wanted to go there)

GR: What goes through your mind before you go onstage at the average show?

Kevon: Lord, touch my lips. Let my words be Your words. Let Your message be heard. Thank You for this opportunity to tell others of Your Love.

GR: Are you working on any future projects/releases that we should look out for?

Kevon: Yes. My 2nd album will be much more diversified than the 1st. With the first, I wanted to pay tribute to the roots of the music I am principally involved in (Jamoo). In the new album, there will be more Jamoo but also R&B, worship, Reggae and even far eastern (Japanese or Indian). I will also feature a couple foreign language songs. It’s going to be nice.

Ministry
"To spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ through music and art and to always point those listening/viewing to Jesus the Christ, the only Saviour and Redeemer of mankind." – Kevon Thomas
