“Broken” was the first song released from Kim Petras‘ debut album "Clarity" on April 25th, 2019. Starting with this release, Petras shared a song off the album each week until the release date of the full project, on June 28th, making a total of 9 promotional singles prior to the premiere.
“Broken” is a pop track infused with some R&B and trap influences that finds Petras singing about heartbreak. It represents a departure from what Kim has brought to the pop-scene in the past since it’s all laid on a darker and more serious note, while still keeping what we all recognise Kim Petras for.
"Even when I’m sad, I always try to make it fun. At the same time, I feel like Juice WRLD has been super fun for me to listen to, even though it’s the most sad shit ever that he’s saying. It’s those concepts that everybody just wants to scream out, so that’s kind of what I wanted to do. I’m kind of braggy in it, I’m just like, “When she leaves you for your best friend, that shit karma/When you see me with my new dude, that’s a come-up”. At the same time, I’m stunting, because that’s who I am."
