"The Yellow Brick Journey" Review
BY FRAZIA LEE

AUGUSTA, GA - There have been several female musicians that have caused us to glare in wonderment due to a combination of musical prowess, charismatic stage presence and bold style such as Erykah Badu, Algebra and Janelle Monae. Adding to this club of entertaining women with an underlying peculiar vibe is Kimberly’Nichole. Coming out of Seattle, Wash., she ventured to Atlanta where she earned her education at Spelman, and concurrently, her love of music skyrocketed.

She has been the featured entertainer at P. Diddy’s restaurant Justin’s, and has performed at Apache Café and Sugarhill along with acts Bilal and Eric Roberson just to name a few. Her vocals are soulful; her music is edgy alternative pop and rock. She exhibits a fresh, wacky presence through her music; enough for you to take notice. Enter “The Yellow Brick Journey.”

“Gloomy days—they’re wearing away” on the bouncy, handclap adorned “Little Girl New.” The adrenaline-pumped “Jump the Gun,” adds a delicate piano to soften the background of this tale of having feelings too quickly. “Carnival” is a whimsical, percussion-filled track about the ups and downs of a relationship, equipped with chord changes and melodic confusion. Jumping out from the alternative pop/rock theme of the album is the bluesy title track, which proves Kimberly’Nichole’s ability to switch up the mood.

If her debut is any indication of her longevity in the game, let’s hope that Kimberly’Nichole’s “yellow brick journey” continues for a while. For the live experience (highly recommended), check her Web site for tour dates. .
