Kris Buckle first began compiling ideas on tape in the bedroom of his East London home some time in the mid 90s. Then finding fulfillment and success in the European charts and playing support shows for Big Beat greats The Prodigy with the much-lauded Sunscreem as their guitarist he kept most of his musical ideas to himself honing his skills as a guitarist and experimenting with D.I.Y recording and home production.
It wasn’t until after a period playing session alongside the much revered and soon-to-be prematurely deceased Irish guitar maestro Eric Roche that some of Kris’s ideas found their way to our ears working with Belgian band Soapstarter, a project which brought together members of Soul Wax, Deus and Vive le Fete. They released their debut album Naked Wheels in 2007 which received 5 star reviews, high rotation on the European airwaves and the interest of Velvet Undergrounds Lou Reed when he requested they send him a copy of the album after a show in Berlin.
After countless live appearances on the European Festival circuit, culminating in playing to 152,000 at Pukkelpop in 2007 Kris returned to the UK to begin recording some of the ideas gathered over the years. Around mid 2008 Kris Buckle spent 6 weeks in the studio and produced his first solo album ‘Birds that fly and other things’ on which he experimented for the first time with string arrangement and playing a number of instruments.
Born into a musically talented family Kris’ father – Henry Buckle – had been a New Faces winner (think ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ 40 years ago), was signed to Mercury Records in the mid 70s and enjoyed huge success in the US and Canada, where he was to tour with young ex-Faces singer Rod Stewart. A later arrival was step dad Steve ‘Froggy’ Howlett – the renowned and respected Radio 1 and Capital Radio DJ, widely acknowledged as introducer of the art of turntable ‘mixing’ and scratching to the UK club scene.
Born in Barking, Kris picked up his first guitar aged 6 and found himself worshiping Chet Atkins, Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens. As with so many ‘creative’ types, it was probably the discovery of smoking materials unrelated to tobacco which moved him to discover the attic delights of his Dad’s yesteryear heroes stumbling, doubtless pink-eyed, upon the likes of Buffalo Springfield, Joni Mitchell, John Martyn, The Beach Boys and many others which continue to influence his music today.
Kris has received a very enthusiastic initial reaction from BBC Radios 2 & 6 Music, BBC TV’s Later and The Word, Acoustic Guitar and fROOTS magazines. The first single from the album ‘All those days’ backed by video set in Epping Forest is promised to be the first of many offerings.
