"American" is a celebration of the American Dream. The lyrics depict two lovers driving around a city exploring and embracing the freedom of being young and in love. The upbeat chorus calls for the listener to be "dope, be proud, like an American" which conveys the sentiment of the unbridled joy, joyfulness, and pride of American culture and the American Dream. Del Rey also makes references to popular American musicians like Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Presley which highlights the staying power of the American ideal. The song captures the spirit of the pursuit of the American Dream and expresses a sense of pride and joy in being alive and living in the US.
It is the second track of Lana Del Rey's third EP, Paradise.
