i still don't understand why people likes more buckley's version to this one, jeff might sing nicely but the sentiment that cohen has in his singing here is insuperable and the composition is a million times better

Not sure if there's a need to decide between the two... But from my point of view, Buckley's version draws a lot from its simplicity. It's a human and his guitar, singing a song. That strikes at least one of the song's meanings - a "Hallelujah" as a very intimate, personal and spontaneous uttering. Of course it's also possible as a more social experience, with a background choir... ;) Aside of that, I'd regard Buckley's version as more timeless. The production of the Cohen version, to my ear, sounds a lot like 80ies, the bass for example. Which is okay, of course. He did a unbelievable job performing this, no doubt. Good, there's both of them, right?

The OC brought this song (Buckley's version) to the public. I you were not around then you could not even grasp how big and influential this show was; I basically sat by my mailbox waiting for that DVD-set to arrive; that season 2 last episode was life-changing for a lost youth; people heard this song and they had no idea Leonard Cohen even existed (myself included). We were introduced to Jeff Buckley back then, but not to Leonard Cohen. It is what it is. Now I understand why Cohen's version is far superior, but I did not back then. I guess it is all about maturing and growing up.

John Cale > Buckley > Cohen theres too much pathos in cohen's version and I prefer Cale's voice. Anyway great song and thanks to cohen for writing it.

I like different voices so LC is alright by me, took me a while in life to catch onto Bob Dylan and Neil Young as well, not that there's any comparison mind you~
