Lifeguard is an American rock band from Chicago, Illinois. Formed in 2019, the band consists of guitarist and vocalist Kai Slater, bassist Asher Case, and drummer Isaac Lowenstein. Known for their energetic live performances and improvisational songwriting style, Lifeguard has gained recognition within the Chicago DIY music scene and beyond. Lifeguard was formed in mid-2019 when Kai Slater, Asher Case, and Isaac Lowenstein met at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. Before forming Lifeguard, each member played in various local bands: Asher Case was part of Neptune’s Core, Isaac Lowenstein played with Horsegirl, and Kai Slater was involved in Dwaal Troupe. The trio bonded over a shared interest in post-punk and experimental rock music, leading to the formation of Lifeguard. Lifeguard's early work includes the EP "In Silence" and the single "Tin Man," which showcased their ability to blend post-punk's propulsive rhythms with elements of noise rock and avant-garde music. Their debut LP, "Dive," released in October 2020, further established their sound, characterized by a mix of structured songs and freeform jams. In 2022, Lifeguard released the EP "Crowd Can Talk," followed by "Dressed in Trenches" in 2023. These recordings, produced at Chicago's Electrical Audio with engineer Mike Lust, capture the raw energy of the band’s live performances. Songs like "Fifty Seven" and "Typecast" feature dynamic shifts in tempo and intricate interplay between bass, drums, and guitar.

Lifeguard's music often draws comparisons to post-punk bands like Fugazi and Unwound, while also incorporating influences from krautrock, particularly the motorik rhythms of Neu!. Their lyrics are noted for their cryptic, acronym-filled content, adding to the band's enigmatic presence. Lifeguard has cited a diverse range of influences, including post-punk pioneers Fugazi and Unwound, as well as the experimental rock of Shellac and The Jesus Lizard. The band members' connections to Chicago's rich musical history and DIY scene have also played a significant role in shaping their sound. Lifeguard is known for their dynamic and improvisational live shows. The band frequently performs at local Chicago venues and has been involved in various DIY music festivals. Their live sets often include extended jams and reimagined versions of their studio recordings, showcasing their versatility and spontaneous creativity.
