A little poll for passerbys here. What general mood does Loscil's music evoke for you? Like, what state does it put you in? Personally, a more so pensive state than a moody one as remarked by some others. Maybe tinted with dysthymia, but nothing major. It's thinking music to me.

Depends on the album. Stuff like Plume or Endless Falls with it's sharp, distinct sound makes me comfortably alert and contemplative. Equivalents or Clara (to some extent) are on the moodier site, the former one bordering on harsh melancholia. The drony stuff like Coast/Range/Arc or Submers is calming and relaxing.

Not sure about the artist, but Equivalents in particular makes me imagine that spaceship from Arrival (or something with of the same shape) slowly entering the atmosphere

I personally experience sort of non-personal states, when you become the nature and life itself. It feels epic and very peaceful.

Been a fan of Morgan's, since his 'First Narrows' debut on Kranky. The time-signatures of his drifts, seem to make sense from a drummer's perspective. His 'Plume' album gets a lot of play-action too. His drift 'Vespera' reminds me a lot of tunes like 'Zephyr' from Plume. Anything by Loscil is great on an ambient playlist! Cheers!!

Scott Morgan made individual music for a series of 8 photos, one of the tracks was then used for a video. The director of the video felt inspired by the music and made 2 more (so far) specifically for the music. If we give the videos some views, maybe that gives the guy a little push in the right direction and he'll make videos for the rest as well, and we actually get to hear all the music. I don't know that myself. I love late autumn and winter and when it gets bright later and dark earlier. In my case it is maybe summer depression (I hate the heat and the long days) but I never really have depression.

I've never heard anyone out there like Loscil. So enjoyable, tranquil, and with wonderfully layered but sparse sounds. ♡

I feel you... I'm very picky when it comes to ambient. Try out Basinsky if you haven't yet. Watermusic II and the new Selva Oscura are my favs.

Ahah, just saw that this was a 2017 comment... Well, if you're still there and haven't drown in a Loscil track, have a look at Bas.

Thanks for your recommendation! I've listened to some of Basinski's tracks every now and then. I haven't heard his Selva Oscura though, I'll give it a listen :)

It was a good idea looking for ambient that is (at least usually / or always) without beats, so I discovered Loscil (and Hammock, they also have many beat-less songs). Endless Falls is a great album, after the second listen it got very enjoyable. Great atmospheres on most songs. I also like that some small sounds never disappear in most songs, as if they're living in them, and I find myself not wanting them to disappear as long as the song lasts. Still after many listens it never gets boring and it doesn't need to be raining outside to be enjoyable.

After 17 years of releasing records and some really good compilation exclusive tracks (some of them I consider his best), I think it's about time to release a compilation that collects those tracks. I've listened a lot, payed thought to track sequencing, and came up with a 2 disc compilation. Disc 1 (50:38 min): 1. Umbra 2. Hyphae 3. Cheekye 4. Else 5. Rye Fields 6. The Sun At Night 7. Samby 8. Halocline / Disc 2 (46:36 min) 1. The Tempest 2. Discent 3. Phantasmata 4. Stream Version I 5. Lodge 6. Altus 7. Hemlock 8. Umbra (Alternate Version). I couldn't find the track "Sparrow" from the "Fall 2002" compilation, so I don't know if it should be on this. Of course some unreleased tracks would be the icing on the cake. Please, get on it Mr. Morgan.

i somehow dislike 'red tide'. album is expectedly good and i like the new sound but I have found myself skipping that one in particular a few times. feels misplaced as it starts so sudden.

No doubt. I think it's just reflexive to notice when a piece of music is similar to another, especially within genres. They both retain their own merit.
