Dave Fridmann uses the studio as an instrument instead of a windowpane. As a long devoted Low fan, I can honestly say this album is a top favorite. It's different - it's more rock'n'roll/shoegaze. "When I Go Deaf" is easily one of Low's finest moments. Listen to how Fridmann slowly opens up the stereo field in "Cue the Strings." He uses sonic motion to mirror a sunrise through the whole song, finally cresting on that final high tonic chord Mimi and Alan hit. Bloody beautiful. Bloody brilliant.

I never said I wanted this album to be more minimal, I just said I didn't want its sound to be ruined by Dave Fridmann being too stupid to know clipping is bad.

"When I go deaf I won't even mind Yeah, I'll be alright And I'll be just fine I'll stay out all night Looking at the sky I'll still have my sight Yeah, I'll still have my eyes And we will make love We won't have to fight We won't have to speak And we won't have to lie"

this is actually a really good album. the change in style/tempo suited them well (at least for an album ;) )
