Luis Frank Arias Mosquera, “El Macry”, was born in Cuba in 30 July 1960, the son of a Cuban singer of songs and tangos in the city of Las Tunas.
He owed his international breakthrough to the music project Buena Vista Social Club in the late 1990s that triggered the boom of traditional Cuban sound. He spent six years as the first voice in the group of Buena Vista star Compay Segundo in concerts around the world and worked with the band of Afro-Cuban All Stars of Juan de Marcos González, who had together with Ry Cooder, brought the project Buena Vista Social Club to life.
One high point of his career was in 2004, when he was involved in making the film “Música Cubana” directed by Wim Winders and its soundtrack. The legendary Pío Leyva had also been one of the founding members of his own band, Soneros de Verdad. In that ensemble, even after Pío’s death he continues to be faithful to the tradition of the cuban sound as singer and bandleader.
