Biography
Lydia Kavina (Лидия Кавина) was Theremin's last protege and now the world's leading theremin virtuoso. Kavina began studing the theremin at the tender age of nine under the instruction of Lev Theremin himself.
Born in 1967 in Moscow, she began performing at age of 14. She studied composition at the Tchaikovsky State Conservatory in Moscow, where she finished her postgraduate degree in 1997. She gaves regulary lessons on the theremin at the Theremin Centre of Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory. Kavina herself has composed many pieces for theremin with ensembles, orchestras and electronics and continues to concertize internationaly.
She has given about 800 performances in Russia, Europa, USA, Brasil, Israel and Japan. Between her works: performances with London Symphony orchestra, BBC orchestra, Boston Modern orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, the Orchestra of electronical musical instruments of Russian TV and radio, opera "Baehllams Fest by Olga Neuwirth and musicals by Tom Waits "Alice" and "Black Rider".
