It is a pity that Totuus Palaa book was not translated into English (and/or Russian, heh). The band's music itself had an authentically disturbed and kind of visionary feel to it, and I've noticed that many Finnish musicians expressed respect for MM in their interviews.

Sorry, what? What do you mean it wasn't? On the compilation album "Complete... Kaikki" Totuus palaa is in English as well with the title "Truth Is Burning" (literal translation)

The book itself is based on some 50 interviews as well as peer reviewed studies it cites, which have been mentioned on the last pages of the book. Based on what I can find from the internet, the author of the book, H.S. Arkko is a translator and holds a degree on cultural history. I will give you a list some facts about Mömmö. 1. Jouni's father Osmo used to be the headmaster of a commercial college based in Joensuu. 2. During his life, Jouni lived in Joensuu, Turku, Uppsala and Stockholm. He also resided in Paihola sanatorium in Kontiolahti many times. 3. He used to be the band bus driver for Sielun Veljet, a popular Finnish band. 4. Reima Saarinen, a Turku-based occultist and a follower of A. Crowley used to be his spirital guru. 5. The name "Silmienvaihtajat" was taken from a poem written by Uuno Kailas. 6. Overall it seems that Mömmö's problems were widely caused by expectations his father held for him. Coming from a high social background was always holding him in heavy chains.

This book really should be translated. As one of the most famous Finnish rock musicians Ismo Alanko (from Sielun Veljet) said in an interview: Вот такая сильная атмосфера. В своем роде непревзойденный. Это как классический альбом. В Финляндии нет ничего подобного, с чем можно было бы сравнить его. И это так действительно. Песни, сделанные настоящими. Не просто чтобы у нас была группа и чтобы получить песни для выступлений и студии, а словно человек, находящийся на грани, создал эти песни. (Translated from Finnish to Russian by ChatGPT)

7. His favourite bands included The Residents, Joy Division and Scientists. 8. Otra first resisted releasing those English-sung tracks, but yet they were published on "Complete... Kaikki". Jouni was in a depressive and psychotic state (Mömmö was manic-depressive) when those tracks were recorded. 9. Jouni is rumoured having even lived in a forest in a sleeping bag near Ilosaari at one point. The plain reason for this was that he thought his apartment in Noljakka was surrounded by evil spirits. Other rumours tell that Mömmö cursed one of his ex-dates, tried to lit his childhood friend's apartment on fire. The further the book preceded, you could tell that Mömmö REALLY despised the typical middle-class lifestyle. 10. He left William Barclay's book "Prayers for the Plain Man" open pointing out prayer number 12 by the time of his suicide, which ultimately happened via a malpractice.

Stumbled over these like a decade ago when I turned online to hunt for obscure Babylon Whores influences. I'm a huge Danzig fan but anything "goth" to me is disgusting BDSM between fat people & bullied kids rebelling in the least upsetting way possible (to the financial/political establishment): embracing the memento mori aesthetics & listen to gut-wrenching gay pop muzak by drama school dropouts w/ "meaningful" tattoos like avenged sevenfold, but ofc I know it aint that simple. Anyhow, Ike mentioned Mana Mana to me or that Antti Litmanen did some guitar work on Kaikki or however it was, I came to listen to them & damn that is some gloomy shit. Beautiful. I love doom but this is unique. Mömmö died when I was like 6 so I can't say that I mourned him but his departure was obviously a loss. There must be a way to remove the "goth" label from anything this good; it's like horror punk, after Misfits left the hc scene in '83 there has been ZERO acts worthy of the arbitrary label even.

Murheenlaakso eli Mana Mana - Mömmö on muuten kiertueella joulukuun lopussa :). Helsinki, Tampere, Turku. Täältä Helsinki: http://www.last.fm/event/1771077+Murheenlaakso+plays+MANA+MANA . Ja tosiaan Murheenlaakso ilmeisesti kirjoitetaan, levyn nimen vastaisesti, yhteen, jonka kantapään kautta juuri opin :p. On the rocksin sivulla väärin kirjoitettuna erikseen.

I have no idea what you Finns are talking about, but MM = fucking great depressive metal. Only got into them via the equally wonderful Babylon Whores, need to find "totuus palaa" on vinyl. One day, one day. Too many great bands in that country of yours. Hail!

Conflagrator: I couldn't agree more with your your comment. It's so heavy, depressive.. Also, I have never heard about them when in Poland, unfortunately.

The title means pretty much that PantheistUK. The lyrics are about USA. They actually recorded the song in english and it's found on the "Complete... Kaikki" compilation cd as "The Beast". Although Otra Romppanen does the vocals on it IIRC, which arent that good, but I guess you'd understand the song better. And people who are pondering where to get their cd's, you could try http://www.recordshopx.com/artist/mana_mana/complete_kaikki/ . The compilation has all their recorded songs pre-"Murheen Laakso". And Levykauppax ship worldwide with pretty reasonable costs I think.

"Ilmestyskirjan peto" is a masterpiece. I don't understand a word of the lyrics, but it's one of these bands where the music speaks for itself. My online translator says something like 'Apocalypse Beast' :p

Takkeri, Suot on vähän samantyylistä..
