Biography

From the sunny coast of Santa Cruz, California, singer-songwriter Marya Stark emerges from Gadgetbox Studios, where she and producer Andy Zenzack have been chiseling away for over a year to delicately craft a sonic masterpiece. Marya’s debut album “The Garden” is a collection of 13 songs ranging in influence from classical aria, pop music, and cinematic indie folk. Each song blossoms, carving its own unique aesthetic world. The record features lush string arrangements, pounding orchestral drum sections and Queen-styled vocal harmonies. At the center of it all is Marya’s refined, hypnotic and enchanting voice weaving intelligent, honest and lucid stories. Her hope-filled anthems, dynamic musicality and expansive emotional landscapes show the many facets of a passionate, awakening heart.

An Arizona native, Marya has been writing songs for most of her life. Her first writings were experimental commercials and fairytales. During her journey through performing arts high school, these poems and ditties evolved into humorous parodies and melancholy emo songs. It wasn’t until college, however, that she really discovered her knack for songwriting. Originally intending on studying opera on a vocal scholarship at Chapman University, she became increasingly interested in psychology, integral studies, spirituality and the healing arts. Stumbling upon Music Therapy as an alternative major to vocal performance allowed her to become deeply steeped in these studies. It was a game changer for Marya, opening the floodgates of songwriting as a self-cultivation practice beyond performance. Marya’s relationship to music transformed rapidly in those years, and since then she has never looked back.

Now several years later, a degree in Music Therapy, a Masters study in Medical Qigong, and hundreds of performances under her belt, Marya is excited to share her debut release “The Garden.”
