My take: The effort to 'get' this album was well worth it and it's definitely their best since Crack the Skye. It just has depth (esp. emotionally) and sincerity that the three prior albums (The Hunter, OMRTS and Emperor of Sand) lack, although don't get me wrong those albums contain some very enjoyable individual tracks... I find many 60+ min albums bloated and uneven in quality, but Hushed and Grim though a behemoth is really really good and surprisingly doesn't overstay its welcome. Welcome back Mastodon!

I think every Mastodon album is a grower but this one specifically gets better with each listen.

Its a great album. Alot of nice new music to explore with Mastodon. Maybe it takes some time to understand how great This album is.

One of the most boring I ever heard, luckily I waited some months... only Senjutsu can be more irrelevant

I love Mastodon and to me this is another great album and I do like every song on it. But 15 songs or 90 minutes is a bit too long even for me (and I am an old school album-format kinda guy). I could definitely trim off 2-3 of my least fave tracks here. No idea where I'll rank this one eventually. My second listen fared better than my first so I'm sure this album will grow the more I listen to it. I also loved EOS, OMRTS and TH unlike many others. But one thing is certain - this is no new CTS, which still remains my crown jewel of Mastodon albums.

Weird and cool. Unconventional pacing that will no doubt become a "classic" after people digest it. Or not. *shrug*

Could you please compare it against the Spotify version? I think the album is pretty solid but the mix sounds horrible on Spotify...

I think it sounds more 'open' and less compressed? Seems the music sounds deeper and more natural. I have only listed to it on Spotify in my car.

Just another shitty Mastodon album, nothing to see here. Unfortunately this comes from the band that created Remission, Leviathan and Crack the Skye

really liked the album. has their characteristic sound but still moving forward on the path that their latest releases were pointing to. even a bit more heavier than those at some parts.

A little more accessible than previous albums, but full of multi-layered and interesting songs. Best heard in a dark room with a good pair of headphones. Standout tracks for me are "More than I could chew"; "Teardrinker" and "Eyes of Serpents"

I didn't love it either but even Pushing the Tides itself is better than the whole Emperor of Sand.

Agreed. It's been a downward slope since Blood Mountain. H&G is 90 minutes of extreme boredom, except the drumming. Brann let's a bit loose with his hand work like the older albums. But other than that, it's a total snoozer. I keep looking down at the time and think "seriously, this song isn't over yet?!"
