This really is the perfect door to sludge/doom metal if you want to get into these genres, speaking from personal experience

one part of me says this is their weakest album of the 90's and the other says it's one of their best. Hooch, Going Blind, Honey Bucket, Hag Me, Set Me Straight, Sky Pup, and even Pearl Bomb are some of my favorite Melvins songs.

Definitely not their best album like many claim. Wouldn't even make the top 5 in my eyes. Still, can't go wrong with Hooch, Night Goat, and Hag Me.

Agreed on all counts. Not sure why so many single this one out as their best. Still a great record, though, and one of the best starting points for someone looking to get into the band.

Sure, I'll grant that it's being on a major is one of the reasons it's more readily available and popular, etc., but the opinion that it's their best holds through til the present on sites like RYM, where the average user is certainly not someone who relies on major labels to gain access to music. If it were true that its being on a major were the sole reason for its being considered the best Melvins record, wouldn't it hold true that Stoner Witch and Stag would be considered as right there among their best and most popular? Unless you're implying that Houdini's being the first on a major is somehow what puts it over the top, which I would say is pretty dubious at best. The fact Kurt Cobain "produced" this one and critics have often called it their best are at least as likely if not more likely to have influenced listener opinions into the present as its being on Atlantic, honestly.

Great album, of course, but I hate the party line that this is the best Melvins album by a mile, etc. This is really pretty middle of the road in their discography. I personally prefer Stoner Witch and Stag to this one, as their Atlantic albums go, and a lot of the stuff released both before (Bullhead, Lysol, Gluey Porch Treatments) and after (The Maggot, The Bootlicker, Hostile Ambient Takeover) is superior. Still, there are a handful of classics here that every Melvins fan must have: "Hooch," "Night Goat" (perhaps the ultimate Melvins song), "Honey Bucket" (also perhaps the ultimate Melvins song).

Eh, I don't personally tag the Melvins as "grunge," but they are a difficult band to really categorize. I've never really understood the obsession with having every artist and album pigeonholed perfectly into the proper subgenre, though. Some of us may view "grunge" as kind of a silly genre tag but there are plenty of people who refer to it as such and who think of the Melvins as one of the creators of that sound.

I was just joking. Not in a funny way I guess. Honestly, I totally worship those guys. Especially Houdini. And I don't care about grammar, Metallica or where the Melvins are from. Now stop reading and do not write back. Just listen. LISTEN, IT'S MUSIC!

The amazing quality of the music aside, this is actually probably my favorite album artwork ever.
