Abbreviated
probably my favourite mogwai album and absolutely one of my favourite albums ever, it just draws me in from the very beginning with that AMAZING Iggy Pop sample, followed by the soft ballads of cody to the harsher sounds of ex-cowboy. the finale of punk rock/ puff daddy/ anti christ feels like i'm at the end of the world as we know it, i truly adore the hell out of this album

A lot of the first haf is overy samey and meandering but the second half is fucking great. (Also, all the interior artwork in the iner notes is better than the cover.)

This is their best work. The first half is lovely in a really spare way that they lost with their more densely arranged later material, and the second half just destroys everything.

Having recently got into Codeine through Mogwai getting them to play at ATP, I can totally hear the influence they had one this album, which makes me love it even more than I already do. And it's already one of my favourite albums.

the album cover is scary, but the music is probably good (I haven't listened to them yet).

I think it received slightly mute reviews when it came out because everyone was basically expecting Young Team v2, but if you ignore its predecessor I reckon that it's actually one of their finest releases. Cody and Waltz for Aiden are up there with the best tracks they've ever recorded.

The reason this is their best album is the fact that it works the best as an ALBUM. Ok, Happy Songs and Mr Beast may have better stand alone tracks, but as a coherent collection of songs, this is Mogwai's finest effort.
