Impending Doom. This song unsettles me, which is uncharacteristic of the Mogwai

@Isaaaaaak It's also the name of a Japanese spirit, not sure if they're related.

Yes, 8/8 captures the way it subdivides: it's a 6/8 plus an extra quarter, not four quarters. If we *really* wanted to simplify, though, we could just call it 1/1. :-)

I think 8/8 is a better way to count this personally. The beats that they put emphasis on give it a 1-2-3 1-2-3 1-2 feel, which is like a bar of 6/8 with an extra 2. 4/4 would require some unnecessary syncopation so subdividing it is better

not trying to be a dick.. this song is great btw. that comment just caught my eye. With every jazz theory class I've taken I've always been taught to simplify time signatures.

wow. why not overcomplicate? 4/4 would suffice. considering 8/8 is just 8 eighth notes and an eighth note is half of a quarter.. that's just straight 4/4

I like the brooding 8/8 time signature. A forerunner to "You Don't Know Jesus," which is in 16/8.
