A marvelous array of lyrically ingenious and perfectly crafted songs, in my opinion "Years of Refusal" is part of the holy trinity of solo Morrissey with "Your Arsenal" and "Ringleader of the Tormentors".

You mean like a string of three albums somehow considerable like a unity, or at least the first chapter, second chapter and third chapter of a whole story? I would approve.

It's hard to say; they're all so unique in ways, but "Refusal" and "Ringleader" both have particularly dark undertones. There's the overall sound and the mood, which makes it hard to group anything but sequential trilogies together. If I had to abstain from doing that, I'd almost say "Southpaw Grammar," but I'm not a big fan of that one and nothing feels quite right with this pair anyway. I can't see it with "Your Arsenal" in particular because it's almost jubilant overall. Where's the connection for you?

If we want to think in terms of triplets, possibly 1) "Viva Hate", "Kill Uncle" and "Maladjusted" are just nothing but ex-Smith solo albums, nice but well ok, next please 2) "Your Arsenal", "Vauxhall and I" and "Southpaw Grammar" represent a three-step transition from youth to maturity and I love them, in particular the first and the last 3) "You Are the Quarry", "Ringleader of the Tormentors" and "Years of Refusal" is the three-step transition from maturity to the third age: farewell UK, then farewell Italy, then farewell world, I'm good by myself 4) "World Peace…", "Low…" and "I Am Not…" may sound like the works of a conspiracy theorist or something like this, I mean, there are excellent moments and excellent songs and I'm not going to repudiate Moz at all, but it seems the life path of Morrissey is going to a very slippery slope. "California Son" is a divertissement.

Particularly interesting record. I like the vocals A LOT. He sounds old as hell and yet fabulous. Lyrically speaking, it is genious. The album title says it all. I love, love, love (...) this man.

I liked I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris but the rest of the album really disappointed me. Why must the band play really loud, stodgy pub rock for every song? It made me think about songs like Hold On To Your Friends and I Won't Share You and long for a touch of subtlety. Remember how classy Break Up The Family was? The songwriting (excluding lyrics) on this record is generally uninspired. Maybe this kind of music is what Morrissey wants, but I can't help thinking his talents are being wasted with him yelping over a boring rock band.

I'm going to have to eat my words on this one. The production isn't the best, sure, but don't judge this one until you listen to the CD, because ALL of the rips suck a lot. It actually sounds better than Ringleader. As for the content, it's lively. The bass is lively, the tunes are great, not as great as most of You Are the Quarry, but close. Moz's voice sounds young and strong ("renewed strength"), not old and frail like on Ringleader. The lyrics are perhaps a little more aggressive than in the past, but it's not a bad thing. As for the general sound, lots of rock influence and general loudness, so that's a little different. That's where I think most might have a problem. This is a great record I won't be forgetting about, personally.

I hate this production as well. Loudness war up the ass. Range, guitars, vocals, and even drums suffer. If you think Death Magnetic sounds good, perhaps you haven't heard much Metallica? Good thrash metal sounds more raw and clear rather than one big, consistently loud muddy buzz. Check out the Guitar Hero mix, srsly.

The songs are good, but the mastering of this album is truly terrible. It's in a short list of the worst-mastered albums I've ever heard (Death Magnetic is worse... beyond that I'm not sure).

thanks again Mozzer for a bunch of great tunes - this album grows to me after hearing it twice.... he's unique, nobody writes and sings like him. Very hard rocking production, the drums were extremely mixed in the front of sound.
