On October 20, 2023, Angela Potts took to Instagram claiming that her son, NLE Choppa, was missing via a now-deleted post reading:
Y'all help me pray over my child. He plans on moving back to Cottonwood where we worked hard to get out of just for a mixtape SMH! I ain’t talked to this boy in hours and he usually doesn’t do this. One thing I know about my son is that he doesn’t go ghost for any reason.
Two days later, on October 22, 2023, Choppa wiped his Instagram account’s posts and announced the surprise release of his second EP, following 2019’s Cottonwood. Being set on reverting the “Old Choppa,” NLE uploaded a freestyle recorded at Cottonwood — his home street — to Instagram.
Cottonwood 2 Deluxe 2.0 is a testament to NLE Choppa’s grittier Memphis style that was prominent in his earlier tracks including “Shotta Flow” and “Clicc Clacc.”
