Biography
Nathan Mathes is a singer-songwriter from Green Bay, Wisconsin. People have described his music as indie folk-rock, featuring songs that are driven by acoustic guitar and subdued, heartfelt vocals. Mathes spent a number of years fronting indie-rock bands in the Green Bay area before releasing his first solo album, American Whitecaps, in 2010. Mathes has since released three more albums: Roselawn, in 2011, and Bellwether. Arbutus and Recs, both of which were released on the same day in 2013.
Mathes has played extensively throughout Wisconsin and the Midwest, and his music has been used in several national television and radio shows, with placements on MTV, Public Television and Public Radio.
These days Mathes spends most of his time writing and recording music and pondering this question: "Do I want to make great music that everyone will hear, or do I want to make great music?" Setting aside those lofty, child-like visions of fame and notoriety that seemed to pervade his musical being for so long, Mathes has recently begun embracing and nurturing the thing he loves most about music: creation. The creation of intriguing and memorable melodies. The creation of sonic textures. The creation of feelings and mood. The creation of something that didn’t exist just a little while ago, but something that may last far beyond the life of its creator.
For now, simply creating and putting music “out there” is enough to satisfy Mathes. And if people hear it, well then that’s just icing on the cake.
