This was the first song by NMA I ever heard. Saw the video on the old 120 Minutes and have loved them ever since.

Great band. I have seen live many times. they're just as good playing live as in the studio. By the way, this song is NOT racist. It is a comment about how the UK and the USA have an 'understanding' (if you like).

I'll bet the writers would be thrilled to know that their song has sparked this discussion, even now - 25 years later

The UK is not the 51st state of the USA. The UK is under the jack-boot of the EU.

Dear @spittle8 So long countries like the United States need "52. or 53."states for carry out their dirty jobs (Guantanamo, Abu Greibh) You have to live with emigrants in your streets.

@spittle8: eduardgrebe made a perfectly valid post which clearly flew miles over your head. What you're doing in NMA's shoutbox is beyond me. To put it in terms that you MIGHT understand - I love Americans, it's just a shame that you/us lardy Europeans murdered 99% of them. You're a foreigner, 'Libertarian founding fathers' - YOUR ARSE!

@Eduard My 'we' is the electorate of the United States. We deserve citizenship because we were born here/legally emigrated here. I think you might have failed to understand my post, as yours makes little sense. What is offensive and reactionary about it? Puerto Rico offers America nothing in benefit, we gained it I believe in a war with the Spanish empire, and we don't owe every poor people on the fucking planet our charity. If that offends you, then maybe you'd be happier living under socialism. Personally, I'm a libertarian, as were the founding fathers of my country, and in America we are violently opposed to forcing people to do anything against their will. That includes fixing the financial woes of foreign peoples when people in my own neighborhood are barely surviving.

Metawirt, Puerto Rico is not a state in any way, shape or form. Puerto Rico is only a dependent territory because we're too polite to tell them to fend for themselves. We spend billions on keeping their island habitable, get nothing in return other than unwanted immigrants who clutter our streets and commit crimes, and the ability to taste the tropics without leaving U.S. territory.
