to be fair, “someday we’ll know” did pretty well and became a standard. and is it really fair to call them one hit when he quit the industry while that one hit was still climbing the charts? for it to be a WONDER they had to keep trying; the wonder here is a new pop star deciding they don’t wanna be one

i'm going to keep coming back to this shoutbox periodically for as long as it exists, so i think i'm going to keep a running list of the little moments that make this song so charming and full of heart. i'll start a few months from now. feel free to add a reply and beat me to the punch!

Probably not what you want but I like the part where he says he'll kick in the asses of Beck, Courtney Love, Marilyn Manson, and all of the Hanson brothers.

but you're close to one: the gasp for air he takes before that last line about kicking ass. it reminds you he's the wide-eyed underdog who's biting off more than he can chew, and he's got a sense of humor about it. the rest of the song sounds huge and immaculate (so much so that U2 called it the one song they wish was theirs), and this one moment right at the end sounds so playful and humble. that last verse shouldn't work at all, but it really does, and i think it's because he takes that breath where he does

(it's also the essence of the song that U2 would've totally missed. bono would've punched in another take to get rid of the breath and the entire thing would've sucked lol)

Hello :33 I was just put onto this song today, and I just wanna say that I commend your enthusiasm and dedication. I'm looking forward to seeing your list whenever you're ready! If I could add one thing to this list, it would be that part at around 3:40 where Alexander goes into a falsetto for the "fly high" part. There's even a cheesy (and a bit scary sounding when you focus on it) whisper at 3:46 too. It's majestic!

that spoken whisper is the one second of the song that i've ever been ambivalent about. it's super weird and it's not even buried really, you can miss it on your first listen but once you've heard it it's the loudest thing there. to me it always felt like a way of undercutting the emotion of the song right at its climax (and that does seem to be the intention). but in time i've grown to love it – it does work as a funny wink, and again it shows the sense of humor gregg had even at the peak moment of his masterpiece...it's very '90s, very gen x, and i feel like this song was the last gasp of that decade's spirit and optimism. i don't know if it would be that if there wasn't that little shrug there with the whisper

another cool thing about this song is that the bass guitar is absolutely the lead instrument. incredible melodic playing that really drives the whole song forward, despite it being built around a protools grid – they were definitely listening to stuff like "ain't no mountain high enough" at the time, it's pure jamerson. it even takes a bit of a subtle solo during the bridge while gregg is wailing – that little fill at the top of the fretboard at 3:58 is the real climax of the song, and it's what really sells the euphoria of that section. not sure if john pierce came up with what he played himself or if gregg directed him, but either way it's brilliant and the song just wouldn't work if the basslines were any simpler

Now that you mention that fretboard fill on the bass, this song would NOT feel complete without it. Thank you for pointing it out! Also generally speaking, I never realized just how involved the bass is in this. You were right to say that it's the lead instrument.

if i could pay, i dunno, a hundred dollars to give any song an extra 30 seconds before the fade, it'd be this one

(second in line would've been the "meant for you" or the original dennis wilson "forever" by the beach boys...but we already got those! maybe this album will get a deluxe reissue someday)

(btw: referring to the album version here specifically. already there the fade comes later/goes longer and you can hear this little falsetto vocal riff he just barely starts going into, it's perfect)

I'm wishing you the best and hope to hear you're in a better place! If I can help motivate you... 1) it's a cool booklet, nothing mind-blowing but cool colors, turn-of-the-millennium graphic design and the whole thing vaguely feels like a joke; 2) a few of other other songs also have extra lyrics/postscripts that don't appear in the songs; 3) the extra lyrics to You Get What You Give have a line that directly references a random-ass song from another artist. (You have a over 500 scrobbles of that artist, and you've scrobbled the song eight times so I think you'd get the reference!)

also: you’re the only account i’ve ever seen on here that’s older than mine (props also for helping pay for the site!), and if that’s an earthbound reference, i am one of the proud few westerners who bought the game the week it came out ☻ without a doubt a huge formative influence on my musical sensibilities…

i resent that biden made this song about himself and his son. take "closing time" or "jumper," fine, but this is sacred

For some reason, this song (amongst a few others) perfectly represents the vibe I get when I think about the late 90s.

You can hear the 90s optimism in this song. That sounds cheesy and like it's a joke, but man, seriously...
