*August. I'm so excited to see them again. I might have to go to both the London and Kingston dates.

the first band that I ever saw live, 7 or so years ago (can't remember exactly)... so even though I'm not much of an active listener they hold a special place."I'm not gonna go to work today. I wanna feel the sun shine on my face."

substancex is a nerd. Home sounds just like their older stuff but with better production and songwriting. Getting bent out of shape over the artistic integrity of a POP punk band is silly, especially when there was barely any actual change in their sound. Even if there was a drastic shift in sound, why would they even want to play to a bunch of snobby, elitist manchildren? The last point and probably one of the most important is the fact that you compare it to "a really cool intelligent girl whoring herself up to impress some witless frat douche," get over yourself dude. The band doesn't owe you a redo of Hospitals just because you're stuck on it and unable to catch up, just like a cool intelligent girl isn't "whoring herself up" just because you dislike what she likes. Contrary to what you may think, nobody is required to please you, work on your obvious entitlement issues.

substancex your opinion is stupid and shit. like, really dumb shit that you're typing. they probably re recorded janie because they value the song and wanted a version that was better produced.

Instead of dwelling on this anymore, I'm going to start an OWTH-influenced punk band where I sing heartbroken OWTH-esque lyrics about how Off With Their Heads let me down. It'll be meta as fuck.

Anyway, I was just pointing out the obvious fact that they drastically changed their production and vocal style on this album. And re-recording "Janie" makes it seem like the band intended this record to be a lot of peoples' first OWTH record, so they decided to include a high fidelity re-recording of one of their catchiest early songs. It all seems like a lame calculated attempt to expand their audience. Good for them if it works, but I would've liked to see them get huge on their own merits instead of pandering to what a lameass mass audience wants.

Only insecure douchebags care if a band they like gets popular with a "mainstream" audience, and that's not what I'm complaining about. I have a right to be annoyed when I see a really amazing band going out of their way to change their sound to get bigger. I wouldn't give a shit in the first place if I didn't love this band's music so much.

Gotta take notes here so I get it right when I start my own punk band. So... rerecording songs = not cool?

Also, did I mention that the new album has "real singing" and a re-recording of an earlier song? I just thought I'd throw that in, since I'm pretty sure I haven't already brought up these points before in this shoutbox.

And let's be honest here - you also think Sum 41 is good, so your opinion on punk rock is pretty suspect. Home's definitely good though.

I don't give the slightest shit if a band gets bigger - it just rubs me the wrong way when I see musicians blatantly tailoring their sound to a mass audience, especially when it's a band as dear to me as OWTH. It's really lame to see such a fantastic band selling themselves short by giving the audience what they think they want. Cmon - you're really gonna claim that the same album where they suddenly have slick production values just so happens to also be their first one with "real singing" and a re-recording of an earlier song? It doesn't even make me angry or possessive of the band - I just think it's sad more than anything. It's like seeing a really cool intelligent girl whoring herself up to impress some witless frat douche.

Who cares? Home is fantastic. I couldn't care less if this is them "selling out", which, by the way, is complete bullshit. Sounds pretty natural to me, but I suppose I haven' t been through what you've been through. I haven't seen what you've seen. I just don't even know, man.

It doesn't come off as a natural progression, since "In Desolation" didn't stray from their sound at all. Now on the new record there's suddenly "real" singing, they re-recorded one of their earliest songs, and the production sounds like it belongs on a late 90s major label pop punk album. I witnessed all the mainstream sellout cashgrab records some of the bigger pop punk bands churned out in the late 90s in an attempt to get huge after Blink 182 popularized pop punk, and this album is among the most blatant example I've seen of a punk band trying to pander to a mainstream audience. Just my opinion though, so whatever.

I think the new album is pretty good. I don't think they're intentionally trying to get huge. "Home" sounds like a pretty natural progression from "In Desolation" to me, nothing about it comes off as forced. They probably will get bigger and there may be a few copycats, but we can just ignore those...

I watched ATDI blow up back in the late 90s, and I'm getting a really strong "Relationship of Command" vibe from this new record. I hope this doesn't usher in some new trend where commercial punk bands write insincere self-deprecating lyrics about being drunken fuckups. OWTH always spoke to me because I actually live the sort of degenerate lifestyle they sing about, and it would suck to see retard copycat bands trivializing that subject matter as a pose.

To clarify - I'm not criticizing punk bands who want to get big. I'm criticizing the ones who achieve success by making a calculated change to their sound. It always ends up coming off like the band are careerist whores.

The song deserved a re-recording. But the fact that they did that in the first place just makes it even more obvious that this record is an attempt to get huge. I'm surprised they didn't just make the record self titled, another strategy from the rulebook for pop-punk bands who want to try to craft a commercial "breakthrough" record. I'm all for a band getting rich on their own merits, but not when they pander like this.
