Biography
PFA is a punk band hailing from Veszprém, Hungary. Their music is aggressive and intense, mostly referred as 'trash punk', mainly influenced by 80's American melodic hardcore (Gorilla Biscuits etc).
PFA so far went through a lot of musical, member and name changes, but because every former and active members belong to the same friends community, common sense recognises PFA as a result of organic process.
First incarnation of the band, Cukorborsó was found in 2001, but as for 2009 the members are around their 20th year, their early years arguably worth of few highlights. With a totally amateur attitude, these teenage boys performed three-chords songs about topics mostly described 'strange', like indian hamburgers and beavers. These early years show a still longing touch of PFA: even as kids, their passion about music was not suppressed by lack of musical skills, money or whatever.
The name PFA came around in 2006 after member changes and with a more professional attitude. PFA is an inverted abbreviation for Animal Farm Pigs, a reference to the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell. Under the new moniker they did some demos, influenced by skatepunk bands like NOFX and Propagandhi.
A new change of direction came in late 2008, motivated this time by 80's hardcore. This process shows somewhat similarities of a now defunct Hungarian punk band, Redlineoffside, which admittedly influenced PFA. PFA also covered one of their songs, A kisebbik rossz szindróma.
In 2009, as a result of intense touring and putting out 4 materials, alongside with Plan Beer they became one of the most hopeful bands of the newest wave of Hungarian punk, drawing comparisons to the aforementioned Redlineoffside and Something Against You, two already broken up groups defining the early 2000s for Hungarian underground punk.
The materials only available by PFA (and the only ones reflecting the bands actual characteristics) have all come out in 2009. They all are available for free at the bands Myspace profile and show low quality production, as only Yellow Water and River of Chaos albums were recorded in a still lo-fi studio.
The earliest of them, a 31-song demo 31 pieces of shit lasts no longer than 11 minutes and makes references to Ian Mackaye, Sid Vicious and Jan Ullrich. The demo includes covers by NOFX and both Redlineoffside and Something Against You. This demo offered somewhat of an introduction for the new PFA.
Their next EP, Yellow Water still keeps the receipt for fast and furious songs, but provides a landmark: this was the first proper material for a PFA on the way of turning into a proper band. It was also reviewed by Metalhammer, the biggest Hungarian rock magazine, though the hardly competent reviewer compared PFA to The Exploited. The River Of Chaos EP follows the same road and shows fast development of PFA's songwriting skills.
Inbetween the two, PFA also produced an instrumental one-song demo titled Onions, Beans + Mushrooms and lasting a surprising 52 minutes, for a band whose songs usually don't even reach one minute.
