I was reviewing my 2023 Playback and it said I was Paula Cole's top listener in 2023 with 1309 scrobbles. I am amazed by this and found it so interesting that I just had to mention it.

It was never a question of whether Paula Cole had a great voice or musical talent... she's just the type of person that I can see a lot of people not caring for

I don't agree at all, @Zach216. You are being much too harsh. If you don't connect with the music, I'd just let it go. But there just isn't evidence that her songwriting is flawed, and certainly you can't take a swipe at her personality! "Raven," for example, is one of my favourite albums, maybe second after "This Fire." It just really connects with me, so raw yet mature. It's just my opinion, but I think we need to let the artists we love follow their muse. If it goes in a different direction than we want to go, then it's okay to part ways.

Paula's always been one of those.... "Here talent level is HERE people, so why'd she only end up here...." and I never wanted to believe it was some type of character or personality deficiency but it is. Now she gets to play in front of anywhere from 80 to a max of 200 old people for the rest of her life and career. It's actually too fitting!

More quality songs and certainly better than "Raven" but I don't know... personally, I'm so far removed/detached from what she does, at this point... Paula wrote "Courage" (lyrically) to quietly, humbly sound inspired... than "Ithaca" had some exciting moments but just when it seemed she was 'figuring it out'... she gets all... "Oh yeah, I've been oversinging" and now she writes this super subdued... continually depressive drivel. What happened to the exhilaration, the so-called "joy"... I haven't heard any of that on these last 2 records. She's really fizzling out... there's no energy or liveliness... I personally believe she's in an extremely stagnant point in her life and career. It's sad because she has a stunning voice but to hear her keep writing about all these like Proper Noun's...names and cities for lyrics. She should tighten up the song-writing and get more universal and less specific with her words and melodies. I can't stand how specific her writing is...like stop already

i don't mean to reduce all her talent and her craft and her value and her worth, to only 1 attribute (or 2 like you seemed to have done in comment above this one): a) comatose/un-dynamic singing b) lyrically unappealing (to you) due to intentionally avoiding coloring her songwriting by numbers/I-IV-V-vii7-bii~ii/#II-I basic chord progressions (joke, that chord progression was a joke). What Im trying to say is that from what I gather, the less dumbed down her work is, and more, general... vague... manufactured... slutty, whorey, maybe.. the more you feel in phase with her music... which takes me to my POINT

MY POINT IS: YOU STOP IT ALREADY. LOOK! She already made one of the biggest contributions to Female Alternative Music/Lesbo-Contemporary from the 90's... Which is She Brought Hairy Armpits to the Mainstream, which made it ok for both Male and Female, to wear and Not Hide, to Cherish and to Indulge.. To spit on, and to lick the spit off the pit to be spat somewhere else (not necessarily a body part). So all that shnizzle youre talking about "how specific her writing is... booo hooo"... Stop Whining and Enjoy the Fetis,... I mean, the music.. Enjoy the Hairy Armpit Music. Why does "Where Have all the Cowboys Gone?" slap so hard!!?

It has moments... but the production ruins a lot of it for me... "Scream" needs a soft/pop beat but instead has a snare-crackin' and it's so unpleasant and doesn't accentuate the vocal it actually takes a lot of attention away from it. Conceptually, a title like RAVEN; I'd assume EVERYONE was thinking BIG... and it really didn't take me anywhere new. A song like "Manitoba" was written in the 80s for a reason.... Everything about her these past few years has been super CONSERVATIVE. If that's where she's going then I guess there's a reason I jumped ship... I've always tried to bring out and encourage Paula to EXUDE MORE CONFIDENCE and to KICK SOME ASS while she's still PLENTY CAPABLE. It just might turn some heads and make people RESPECT her

Maturation and stepping up her game (to me) would've meant an album that was a culmination of ALL of the other previous FIVE records COMBINED into ONE... she needs to get a little more CELEBRATORY (instead of CEREBRAL) she's a SURVIVOR in this INDUSTRY and she should be PROUD of that... start goin' outside-the-box, start writing about things larger than herself... that to me would be expanding and equate to growing exponentially... but I suppose we all have our own definitions. When she told me she agreed with someone that she was "over-singing" on Ithaca I thought "has this chick lost her mind?!?" if that's how you FEEL... EXPRESS it... her vocal-power is something that makes her different. So EMBRACE it... kick it up a notch (or TEN...) Go BIG!

Dude, she wrote that song in the EIGHTIES... I mean to each their own... it's still chocked full of way too much minor-key, melancholic, sob-story-writing... to me that's not a "maturation"... at all, really... she got the divorce and all that out of her system. This was her first album as an independent artist and I just think people are STUPID if they think because there's the bare minimum as far as musical instrumentation... low-budget production value... it's just... eh, whatever. So not worth gettin' into this because I can go on FOREVER.

I disagree. It's as raw as she has ever been, but it feels more mature. "Manitoba" is a perfect example, which harkens back to "Mississippi." "Red Corsette" is as emotionally bare as she has ever been. I think she's finally found her soul groove.

"Raven" still holds up as her most beautiful statement since "This Fire." It's not exactly a comeback since she's been releasing some wonderful albums since, but man, "Raven," wow.

Peaked on "Ithaca"... can no longer write an album of all original brand-new songs... she made some good music that used to mean a lot to me but having gotten to know her on somewhat of a personal level... she should work on developing... (what's it called) A PERSONALITY! Any man with her (or who was with her, quite a long-list there) was for Money or because she was EASY back in her college days.

I got my copy yesterday, been listening to it for nearly a week now. Definitely her best, most impressive work since "The Comeback". I am so proud of her, loved being a part of her campaign... Sitting down & chatting with her at Berklee was a wonderful experience. She's a REAL as it gets, she is the most inspiring person I know. I love her and this record is everything I hoped itd be and more! :-)
