"low point"? Wowee Zowee and this are their best albums. I cannot conceive how someone thinks Brighten the Corners is anything close to a low point.

I've come to like this one more over the years. Initially, I only liked a track or two, but it still is a pretty solid album. The singles are great and Harness Your Hopes is the most Malkmus song they released, all the quirkiness is in there and it's pure gold.

You're not alone in that assessment but to me this is the band's clear low point. Malkmus's lyrics are at their most tossed-off/self-consciously quirky/full of cheap rhyme, his singing is loud, ugly and seemingly deliberately off key at times and the melodies just aren't anywhere near as strong as on any of the other albums, I don't think. I've always thought of Terror Twilight as a major rebound after this bummer and a great record in its own right. It's to Pavement's (and Malkmus's songwriting's) credit that a "disappointing" album by their standards is still a pretty damn good one by most other bands', so this is still a decent LP.

While the self-conscious weirdness of the lyrics and music makes it difficult to familiarize with the album, I think it also makes for an always compelling listen. It's like a wild animal that's harder to domesticate... except for the opening and ending couples of songs, which are there respectively as a bait-and-switch and as a prize for going through stuff like Blue Hawaiian, haha. Also, Spiral's songs don't feel out of place for the first and only time!

@glenth2 I agree with you. The other thing is that Malkmus' singing is overly loud and frequently off-key. Still a decent album, but it doesn't hold a candle to any of the ones that came before it.

Listening to all these Pavement albums closely after a long hiatus, I'm surprised at how introspective and embittered a lot of the lyrics are.

not sure if it's their most depressing album... have you spun "terror twlight"!? ...but it is definitely my favorite. the most solid, up and down; and malkmus himself said it was the most "band" oriented album. the b-sides rule.

The amazing beginning one-two punch of Stereo and Shady Lane is somehow outdone by the ending one-two of Starlings and Fin. And, of course, everything in the middle is great (two of Spiral's best songs, Transport, and Blue Hawaiian especially). Can't even say this is Pavement's best though, because all their albums are so, so, good. This one does deserve more credit though.

initial thoughts: Album is mediocre, B-sides on the first disc rank among Pavement's best. I am interested to see if it changes, as this is the first Pavement record I have not liked first time around (save for B-sides).
