I have been following Pelican since around 2005 and I truly love their music, but gosh, how come they still haven't bought Larry a metronome - that's just beyond me.

Oops, dude, what did you smoke? Did you mean I was a moron by "not getting it"? I started listening to Pelican almost two decades ago and know their stuff inside out. It's just ridiculous to think I'm trolling the guys – I actually wholeheartedly adore them. But Larry's drumming is still poor – you don't need to listen to Portnoy or Bruford or Minnemann or whoever else to work it out.

Is it any coincidence that it’s weighted so heavily with cuts from Nighttime Stories? I can’t wait to hear where they go from here.

Their riff delivery, live, is primo chugga goodness — not unlike Russian Circles — but when I saw them in 2013, their drummer left a lot to be desired... which is the complete reverse of Russian Circles, now that I think about it. I guess what I’m trying to say here is that if you’ve seen Russian Circles, I think you’ve probably caught the best elements of a Pelican show turned up to 11. And if you somehow haven’t, I’d probably prioritize them as far as live post-metal goes. (/personal opinion). Only suggesting this because I’ve been blessed with so, so many opportunities to see RC but only 1 or 2 chances to catch Pelican touring around here.

you know I think a lot of the time on tour bands try new variations and sometimes someone forgets the new replacement bit or extension of a song. maybe they're drinking, tired, or just under the weather or whatever and their autopilot kicks in and they miss a cue or whatever and fuck it up.

"City Of Echoes" is so great. They are so great at bringing texture to heaviness in a non heavy psych kind of way.

I must admit that everything after 'City of Echoes' didn't really do anything for me. But 'Nighttime Stories' sounds as if they finally got back on track!

I enjoy Pelican. I know what I'm in for when I sit down with a Pelican record. And with that said, Nighttime Stories has no right being half as good as it is. Dallas Thomas is the real MVP.

I can imagine the points in their music you are referring to. They got quite a bit more profane...some groove and melody got lost on the way. But I can still enjoy Forever Becoming, though it doenst spoke to me the in the first place. But the heck... Deny the absolute, The Tundra, Immutable Dusk and some other stuff on that album kicks ass. I found they still work good together, for me at least. They still got those breaks and the interplay with drums and guitar/bass that I love. Still excited for the next release to come. btw: the opening riff from Vestiges sounds like Tool's Triad, doesnt it? :-D <3 Pelican

New live album on their bandcamp. Really good, and right now the money will be donated to the ACLU: https://pelican.bandcamp.com/album/live-dunk-fest-2016

I've found that rats tend to shit less on things. Which isn't saying much for pigeons.

There's a great clip in a live Thrice video where you can see a tough-looking guy in a Pelican shirt.
