PENYA is a band that wants to take you on a journey. They mix things up - styles, influences - because they know that's what everybody does - all of the time, in their daily lives. And PENYA seeks to distill that spirit, make it dance and let it it fly
Angelica Lopez has been winning over audiences with her gift of storytelling through song since she was a young girl.
Immersed in the folklore of her homeland, she grew up dancing Mapale barefoot on the hot streets of Cartagena on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. Angelica wrote her first song at the age of 8, and by 17 she was a fully-fledged professional singer. As she got more involved in Colombia’s music scene, she embraced a wide variety of genres including rock, mariachi and salsa. In 2002 while fronting one of Cartagena’s most celebrated folk bands she won the opportunity to tour the UK. Deciding to settle in London and leaving everything behind to follow her dreams brought it’s share of struggle and heartbreak.
An ocean away from home, and singing the music of her native land to a wider audience, she was inspired to seek out like-minded musicians to continue her musical journey.
In august 2008, whilst playing a gig in a rain-soaked Norfolk field, she met her musical compadres Magnus Mehta and Jimmy le Messurier. While creating music the three discovered they all shared the same passion for storytelling, and so PENYA was born.
