@OcellatedGod from two years ago: That's incredibly foolish. Spector is an easy target these days, but he is one of the most influential and important figures in 20th century Pop music. He co-wrote tons of great songs and produced even more. His aesthetic didn't work for every artist and has on occasion harmed the song/album because of its being such an ill fit, but for the most part his approach gave songs a sense of majesty and romance that makes them more than what they would be with a sparer approach.

Every time I listen to a Spector produced album I end up fantasizing how much better it would've been if the band just self-produced it.

Spector was the champion of commercial overproduction and a vicious enemy of subtlety, intimacy and immediacy. Therefore one of the worst producers ever, who's done much more damage to music than good. His "wall of sound" was just a way of making music listenable on shitty speakers (such as jukeboxes and early home stereos), so that the masses would buy records. He was a pro craftsman, not an artist, whose trade was to turn music into a glossy consumer product.

I've read every interview, both court case notes, and every biography on the man. I've come to the conclusion that he is eccentric, but NOT a murderer. Don't judge him until you look at all the facts.

I once told him I loved his music and he was so overwhelmed that in a fit of nerves he accidentally shot me in the face. Shit happens, right?

"When I got to California, Phil Spector had a real reputation for doing his 'walls with sound.' I just looked at it like, 'Walls with sound?' It's just padding the payroll." - Meet the frankly legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Malcolm John "Mac" Rebennack, Jr, better known to the music world as Dr. John: http://www.songfacts.com/blog/interviews/dr_john/

Bastard1 is talking out of his arse. If his theory is correct, then I wouldn't have Be My Baby, A Fine Fine Boy, Da Doo Ron Ron, You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling, To Know Him Is To Love Him, Spanish Harlem, Let It Be & He's a Rebel stuck in my head so consistently.

And who did you learn it from, Phil? Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller. Without them there would be no wall of sound.

He may be a murderer, but he was a brilliant and innovative producer in his time.

I will always be able to say "Hey, I'm somewhat crazy, but at least I'm not as crazy as Phil Spector." For that, I thank him.

A crook, a pervert, and a producer with bad taste who buried artists under his layers. He was known to hold artists at gun point during recording sessions. Now he's in jail for murder. Evil Evil Evil
