"The Bitter End" is the first single of off Placebo's fourth studio album "Sleeping With Ghosts" released in March 2003. Lyricist and vocalist Brian Molko states that "The Bitter End" is a "The back-to-basics rock song, written in two days. Two people trying to come out of a relationship with the least scars. Very fuck you."
"The Bitter End" is very obviously derived from the 1949 dystopian novel "1984" written by George Orwell with very palpable references to the relationship between the novel's protagonist's Winston and Julia and their complicated and deprecating relationship.
The music video for the track sees the band creating a futuristic video while playing in the dish of the Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank, one of the largest radio telescopes in the world. Halfway through the video, the video displays an infra-red image of a couple chasing after each other. They eventually catch each other up and kiss against a wall. Near the end of the video, the band is rained upon. It was filmed in close to Stockport in Cheshire, England.
The track was a minor chart success, making it to number 12 in the UK. It was the last time the band would climb this high in the UK Singles charts. "The Bitter End" is also featured on the French Version of "Guitar Hero: World Tour."
