this album is better and more sophisticated than Seven Churches, the latter sounds unrefined and premature in comparison with this one in my opinion, let alone the sloppy drumming. I considered Possessed mediocre until I gave this album a real chance. Also, I don't agree with claims that this album became less death metal oriented, at least not that much as people say. It still contains the same proto-death elements in riffs and general approach, perhaps the 'weaker' production works less efficiently in this regard this time, but it' a minor drawback.

Best metal album from 80's. This was my opinion in 1986. This is my opinion in 2019.

One of the best definitely.Still listen to it 33 years on from when I first heard it.Funnily enough it got slagged off to bits, although I've never understood why.Anyhoo, its up there with Voivod's Dimension,English Dogs Legend and Death's Leprosy as the finest of that period.Kreator's Terrible Certainty gets a nod too,as does Sabbat's History. I suppose I could throw in Morbid Angel and Bolt Thrower as well, but didn't get to hear Altars of Madness until 1990,and In Battle was more of a punk album in my estimation..

In the exact lineage of Seven Churches, Beyond the Gates is more technical and exudes an amazing demonic atmosphere, but suffers from a weaker production, choking the whole instead of giving it the necessary power. The instruments thus have difficulty in expressing themselves and in fully transcribing the violence of the compositions. On the other hand, its satanic essence is highly palpable, the album only missing from a simple detonator to ignite literally.

About that "weak production", Carl made something unique in metal scene, until now. I never understood those (too many) critics (bad) about this magestic magnum opus where everything sounds perfect. Those guitars were never reach back in sound. Even Satriani tried with " the eyes" but was really an horror comparing with this masterpiece.

I hear you, but still, I maintain my point here, the production is weak and definitely diminish the music on this one unfortunately, a thicker sound would have profited those compositions, althought excellent and richer than before.

Love this record almost as much if not more than Seven Churches. Just super sick riffs and that ominous feeling.

Not as good as Seven Churches but it is still a good album tho. There's a lot of frenzied riffs around here. It's just different, you know.

Don't really like it that much, sounds like they decided to try and keep up with the thrash scene instead of expand on what was unique in Seven Churches...

Beyond the Gates sounds great to me, I really can't hear anything disappointing in the production regarding what i've heard from others. Maybe it could have been panned out a little more but other than that, its a great recording. Not as innovative as Seven Churches but the ethereal feelings from this album is so awesome. Phantasm and the beasts of the apocalypse would be my favourite tracks.
