I don't know why some people insist on linking this album with Slayer influence, despite band members' statements to the contrary. Approach is similar, but it's believable enough that both bands came to similar concepts independently. In my opinion, many songs on this album do sound like a mix of Exodus-style riffs and general composition with Venom-esque sound and overall sinister atmosphere, I mean particularly the latter's songs such as 'To Hell and Back'. Possessed reports that these two bands were the main influences on their style totally make sense to me. That being said, Possessed clearly have gone beyond their sources of inspiration (whatever they are): 'Seven Churches' and especially 'Satan's Curse' are some the earliest examples of proper death metal sound. Terminal Death, Master/Death Strike and Death/Mantas made similar efforts at the time, but this is... well, not the first death metal album as such, perhaps, but at least the first LP album with death metal sound present.

I could agree that Satan's Curse is probably the only 'proper' death metal song here due to its riffs, everything else is either thrash or death/thrash. Still, it's a huge achievement. Seven Churches isn't a 'death metal album', but it has a lot of essential death metal elements and at least one real death metal song.

Do you know a band called Necrophagia? Their first LP came out months before Death's SBG, in 87. I believe that was the first Death Metal (as we know it) strike!!! Like Possessed and Death, Necrophagia started to record demos around 83/84. Worth a listen. Cheers \m/

Even though it is being counted as first DM album ever, it has a rather speed metal-ish feel to me, compared to other classics from Death, Morbid Angel etc. This is not a bad thing, though.

This is a damn masterpiece. It's the first death metal without a doubt. Yeah it's more death/thrash, but i think that Possesssed first made an album this heavy and fast. But never mind i don't want to argue about it, we all have to enjoy it.
