I think, like the band, I went through a phase of hating this song because it's so goofy and out of place on the otherwise pretty bleak Out Of Time. Even if it was intended ironically, it is still very upbeat-sounding. But the older I've got, the more I've come to love it. The guitar line is masterful, the harmonies are gorgeous. Kate's vocal, in particular, is magnificent. I don't care if it's mindlessly happy or grimly ironic. It's just a great song to listen to. :)

Half of why I like this song so much is Kate's vocals, I don't know what the other half is

I…I had no idea people hated this song! Reminds me of being a kid and in the backseat of my dad’s ford explorer

I mean, I still love this song and always have. Haters can hate (including Stipe himself) but it's a good rock pop bop. Kate sounds great on it, too.

Stipe is right about this song, I'm afraid. For a band that generally has good lyrics, it's as bland as a pop rock song can be. It apparently was meant to be ironic? A jolly-sounding song with lyrics about trying to maintain happiness but failing? The content here is too vague for any irony to come across.

I know it's not supposed to be as happy as it sounds, but this is always my go-to song when I'm in an incredibly great mood and just want to dance around like a moron.

I remember, when I was little, my mom had a DVD (video tape? I don't remember) with the music video of this song and she'd play it on the TV for me when I'd come home from school. It always made me happy after rough days. Listening to it now brings back so many good memories.

When i was a child my Mother sent me to some weird Christian art and crafts group throughout the summer and for goodness knows what reason we had to sit in the pews of the church in the morning - which had a large pull down screen for projecting videos on - and they'd play this song. EVERY MORNING. I feel like this can't be real and it's some sort of disturbing pseudo memory. I still love the song though.

I know Michael Stipe hates this, but I love it. Brings back some fond memories, personally :)
