A bit harsh, Jom, lol... but I agree, Ralph McTell, like Al Stewart and Cat Stevens, is singularly un-influenced by Dylan, I would say. Listen to more of his songs, especially Clown, Michael In The Garden, Kew Gardens, and you'll see how very English he is. If you want somebody influenced by Dylan try Phil Ochs or - in joke - Brokejarafingers.

I agree the tune and execution are lovely, but surely the lyrics are acidic about the state of London at the time with homeless people starting to come onto the streets - though in those days it was more gentlemen and women of the road. Nowadays, since Thatcher froze half the poor and Cameron tries to finish the job, the song is acutely more relevant than ever (like Barry McGuire's Eve Of Destruction or Phil Ochs' Cops Of The World).

I've heard a hundred buskers picking their way through this - done it myself - but nothing beats the extraordinary original. But there's much more to Ralph McTell than this song: try Daddy's Here, Mrs Adlam's Angels, Michael In The Garden and many many more...

The world has many homeless people, in all countries as well as many desperately poor. Enormous problems all over. Mind you, over the years I have encountered a number of homeless people in England, in various places, and a faitr proportion seemed to be so thru' self indulgence, mainly with alcohol and drug abuse.
