Biography

Roughed Up Folk originated from a lone demo tape recorded in Los Angeles and mailed to Boston. Recorded by frontman Larry Nichols, the demo was enough to convince his long time childhood friend, and current lead guitar player Brian Sawyer, to move from Boston to Los Angeles to start the band.

In the summer of 2003, the pair spent two weeks on a farm in Massachusetts writing and recording 6 songs before setting out to Los Angeles to recruit the rest of the band. There they met fellow Massachusetts native Ken Bernard, who agreed to lend his drumming to the cause. Roughed Up Folk recorded and released their debut E.P. in the summer of 2005, and soon after joined the band Soundtrack Of Our Lives on a national tour.

The band split in 2006, though they all remained close friends. A last-minute Roughed Up Folk reunion show brought the band back together in 2009. Buffalo, N.Y. native Brad Reaume, who in the interim had taken on the role as a multi-instrumentalist in Larry Nichols new project Rett James Bonn, filled in on bass for the show, and soon became a permanent member.

Reunited, the band got to work on writing and recording a record. After six months of toiling away in cramped rehearsal spaces and makeshift studios, the band released their self-produced record, “Must Be the Moonlight”, in April of 2010.
