Roughed Up Folk originated from a lone demo tape recorded in Los Angeles and mailed to Boston. Recorded by frontman Larry Nichols, the demo was enough to convince his long time childhood friend, and current lead guitar player Brian Sawyer, to move from Boston to Los Angeles to start the band. In the summer of 2003, the pair spent two weeks on a farm in Massachusetts writing and recording 6 songs before setting out to Los Angeles to recruit the rest of the band.
