Great album, I've really gotten into this one lately. Sure, it's nowhere near as good as Power Windows or Presto, but it's so ... dreamy and atmospheric. I love it.

The issue is really just the production...I've heard live versions of Time Stand Still and Force Ten that show that this was a great album with too lifeless and plastic an aesthetic, much like Presto.

"A two star album at best,. but compared to the garbage they have released in the last twenty years this is a masterpiece." that comment gave me cancer. [2]

Not a terrible album, but nothing special either. Signals thru Power Windows is noticeably better. But I'm a fan - I like New Wave, heh.

"... a notable quality drop in songwriting." Wha? This is one of, if not THE, most mature and insightful albums Rush has ever done. Only Presto comes close. Maybe my age has something to do with it, but "Time Stand Still" speaks to me like no other Rush song, and the rest of the album captures that same flavor. As I wrote a couple of years ago, this album goes a lot deeper than the music.

This album is what I would call "advanced listening". For newbie obsessed Rush listeners, this is probably the last album you want to pick up. Even though it's arguably the worst album, it still has many good moments on it. Upon repeated listens, it gets better and better -- which is why only some people will catch some of the magic that is found within.

I don't know, Peter Collins seems to have shafted Peart a bit sonically, so at least production-wise Power Windows edges ahead...

This is a great album by a world class band. Favourite tracks 'Time Stand Still' and 'Prime Mover'. Would recommend it as an addition to anyone's cd collection.

Yeah man for some reason this album really takes me back to 87' - 88' when it came out. Junior year - what a trip! Great times rolling around town jamming it on cassette tape lol! Still sounds great & new after all these years tho...good times

Yeah, I hear ya re: the guitar tones. I think Alex was probably feeling constricted, though. The synth-heavy nature of album seems to turn a lot of fans off. But for me, this was a great one. My fav of the stuff from Power Windows thru Roll The Bones. (actually probably a tie with PW) The first 5 tracks go together perfectly and always bring me back to when it was all new.

This is certainly one of my favourite Rush albums and on of my favourite albums ever! The songwriting is superb, the production is great, and all three guys are on the top of their game. One thing I don't get is when people say there is no (or barely any) guitar on the album. It's there! Alex said he spent 3 weeks doing guitars for this album, and he got it right -- those tones are sublime!

@fry1077 And your comment, I believe, is the least shitty among the haters of this spectacular album, and late 80s Rush.

this album brings me a great feeling. Just when begins with "Force Ten" I already feel something special.

Wonderful album, I really love it. Great sound and songwriting. It was easy to get into after hearing Power Windows so many times over. Force Ten and Prime Mover are favourite tracks of mine to name.

Such an ethereal atmosphere, moreso than any of their other albums. As much as love Caress and 2112, this probably has to be my perennial favourite.

"Power Windows" is honestly the worst I've heard of theirs. Then again, I've yet to hear post-"Hold Your Fire..."
