Emotion Detector is track 7 of Rush's Power Windows album, written and recorded in England, UK, in 1985. Equally heavy on guitar and synthesizer, this track marks the point where the band brought the two into balance. It is a powerful ballad describing how ordinary people shield themselves from hurt by hiding their emotions and the risks associated with opening up, countered perfectly with the risks of keeping those emotions buried. Unusually for Rush's mid-80s material, it features a long, complex guitar solo. Emotion Detector is one of very few of Rush's songs never to have been played live.
