Biography

Jillis Molenaar (The Hague, 1974) is a dutch soundengineer and sounddesigner and mainly works for motion picture projects, but has also worked for television programs and was recently involved in a documentairy project for the radio, for wich he did the sounddesign.
Not only did he graduate at the Dutch filmacademy in Amsterdam, but he also studied at the Interfaculty of Image and Sound at the Conservatory in The Hague.
In this period(1995/1998) he got lessons from people like: 'Dick Raaijmakers, Horst Rickels, Joost Rekveld and Paul Koek' and found out about his love for sound and motion picture soundtrack.

One of the films he did 'sound' for, during his graduation-year at the academy in 2003, was called 'Untertage' directed by: Jiska Rickels.
This short documentairyfilm was nominated and awarded at different international filmfestivals around the world and later on re-edited for the longer documentairy: '4-Elements', directed by the same director.
After his studies at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and the Dutch Film and Television Academy in Amsterdam, he started working as a freelance soundengineer and soundeditor.

Jillis was soundrecordist for 4-Elements, but also recorded some of the work of the film's composer: 'Horst Rickels'.
He worked together with Horst on parts of the music for the film, editing and pre-mixing the rough, recorded material, to be used in post-production.
Together they made the 'Original Soundtrack' for 4-Elements.
Last year(2007), at the Dutch FilmFestival in Utrecht (NFF), Jillis Molenaar was nominated in the category: 'Best Sound' for 4-Elements.

Since a few years Jillis has developed himself as a sounddesigner with arranging and composing skills, using a wide variety of sources for creating soundtracks, soundscapes and music.
Most of the time his work contains a mixture of self-recorded live sounds or samples and re-edited audio fragments and 'partly-accoustic and synthetic produced layers of sound or soundscapes'.
Most of his work is produced in a certain context; sometimes it is a part of a movie-soundtrack, filmscore, performance art-piece,
documentairy or otherwise related to (an) image(s).
Nowadays Jillis edits everything in ProTools and works with a mostly self recorded audio database.
