“Drew Barrymore” portrays a seemingly somber, unassured version of SZA, with the lyrics indicating low self-esteem, especially in a relationship that is so unbalanced. The song speaks on both dealing with insecurity and questions companionship along with self-worth. During her performance at VEVO Halloween 2017, SZA revealed that the song was about a party.

"This next song, I wrote about a party that I went to for a boy … I was really excited it turns out he brought a girl to the party… So, basically, I went. I did not ever see him for the entire party I smoked all weed by myself…And had a fantastic time."

The song was first previewed on the 3rd of December, 2015, as the backing track for the Ford Focus campaign that featured Zoë Kravitz and SZA.

The music video was released June 20, 2017 and included a cameo from Drew Barrymore herself.

The song is heavily inspired by 90’s movies featuring Drew Barrymore, namely Never Been Kissed and Poison Ivy.

Speaking at an NYC show SZA said:

"I just imagine this being the soundtrack to one of those movies. Cue Freddie Prinze, Jr."
