Sashird Lao is, probably, the only trio in the world which is characterized by 3 voices, one trombone, 2 saxophones, one flute, one caisse claire, one darbuka, one looper and others world music instruments.
This is an eccentric and amazing group that completly succeeded in mixing jazz music with world music and urban groove. Sometimes, the three musicians of this trio are, in turn, singers, instrumentists or percussionists whithin a same track. Do not you think this jazz group is simply unique ! Also, this unique variable geometry can both surprise and bewitch you or transgress the usual fences. So let me introduce to you their success.
First, Sashird Lao was, for the year 2006, one of the prize winner of the national jazz music competition in La Défense in Paris, and was nominated as group music revelation in 2007. So do not forget to come to their concert on July 16th 2007 for the jazz music festival of Juan les Pins.
You will just enjoy your time with their tracks which could lead you into another universe ! Second, not only can they play any kind of instruments very well in using their spitefulness but they also dare to compose their own music in playing standard tracks such as Mingus, Elligton, Pastorius or Davis. Sometimes, they give us, at the same time, an orientalist version, an electro and funky touch or blues music rythms. They can play like this in juggling with 3 voices, 2 saxos, 1 trombone, 1 flute, 1 caisse claire, 1 darbuka, and others drums. You will be very surprised and bewitched to watch them juggling with their talents.
Also, you could enjoy their motion on stage if you go to one of their concert.
With the birth of this group, the three musicians got to know african music, jazz music, soul and blues rythms, reggae and funk music. This trio is definetly a kind of a melted jazz group in which jazz music has no borders.
Présentation
Sashird Lao apparaît comme un trio bien original. Le groupe aime jongler avec les instruments et entretien l'originalité en faisant voyager du jazz au groove urbain avec des escales en Afrique et en Orient. Yona Yacoub, Fred Luzignant et David Amar sont tour à tour chanteurs, instrumentistes ou percussionnistes… parfois au sein d'un même morceau ! Cette géométrie variable surprend, enchante et transgresse les barrières habituelles.
Non seulement ils jouent de tout et le font bien, non sans malice, d’ailleurs, mais ils osent leur espèce de jazz via des compos et des reprises (Mingus, Ellington, Pastorius, Davis…) aux arrangements obligatoirement inattendus. Ils orientalisent parfois, ils électroïsent aussi un peu ou groovent côté funk et rythm’n blues.
Le groupe a été nominé au concours national de Jazz à la Défense en 2006 et comme révélation 2007 du Festival International de Jazz de Juan les Pins.
