Ok, the new album is incredible but it could have (and should have been) better. But the strong points are some of the best work they've ever done. I have endless opinions to share so please indulge me.

There's a lot to digest in terms of Max's personal stuff that he discloses on the album, and I think for most people some the lyrics will seem bizarre or go over their head. It's definitely his most unhinged work. He was always saying that this album would be a sort of parody/overexagerration of what he thinks a Say Anything should be, so it was always going to be over the top. Musically, it's excellent. There's so much going on with the instrumentals, I find the whole listening experience to be ear candy. Vocally, Max sounds great but the distortion/lo-fi recording of some of his vocals really doesn't do him justice. My biggest gripe is his inability to just put is a Real Boy in the past. Fan Fiction is the perfect example where he made an incredible song, but then pissed on it with his vocals and lyrics just to make a point about how this is what his fans want and he's not going to give it to them. Still, I enjoy the track, and the whole album is a grower.

I had totally written off Say Anything by the mid 2010s. This new album is going to heal a part of my soul.

Psyche! is a real return to form. Sounds like a B-Side from IDotG. Stoked for the rebirth 💥

im still confused on how iarb is like best emo album of 2004 and arguably early 2000's emo-pop but they never make anything remotely close to it after.

I'd also say In Defense of the Genre is absolutely solid in terms of songwriting. It lost some of the innocence that the band had during their earlier work, but the 2nd disc of the album is packed with great stuff. Vexed, About Falling, Spores, Have At Thee are all bangers imo

i think if Defense had been one disc with a few key lyrical adjustments fans would think it’s just as good

"Wow" is one of those songs where the lyrics are truly so fucking terrible you can't even stand the (admittedly really good) music. "Belt" goes hard though.

That was me for years. I'm slowly liking In Defense of the Genre the more I listen to it (which isn't often)

First listen to the new album and I enjoyed it, the next few I started to worry if actually I didn't like it very much. Then out of fucking nowhere it clicked and I just can't stop listening to it. Wire Mom is one of the best songs Max has released in a long time. Also, new Two Tongues record in the making
