Biography
Sean Lakeman (born 1974) is an English folk musician and record producer. He was a member of folk bands The Lakeman Brothers and Equation and records as Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman.
Lakeman began playing guitar at the age of six. He played with his parents, Geoff and Joy Lakeman, and with his brothers in a family band. He was a quarter of the BBC Radio 2 'Young Tradition Band' alongside Catriona MacDonald, Luke Daniels and Simon Thoumire.
In his early career, he partnered folk fiddle veteran Tom McConville on the UK folk club circuit, and from the early 1990s, went on to perform with his brothers Seth Lakeman (fiddle) and Sam Lakeman (piano/keyboards) as The Lakeman Brothers.
In 1995 the brothers formed the group Equation with singers Kathryn Roberts and Kate Rusby.
After Equation split in 1996, Lakeman co-founded the folk duo Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman with his spouse, singer Kathryn Roberts. In 2013, and again in 2016, they were voted Best Duo at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
Lakeman's credits as record producer for folk musicians and folk-rock bands include two highly acclaimed albums for Levellers, plus albums by his brother Seth Lakeman, and acts such as Bellowhead, Frank Turner, Billy Bragg, Imelda May, The Willows, Carus Thompson, Show of Hands, Mad Dog Macrea, The Long Hill Ramblers and Rev Hammer.
As a session guitarist, Lakeman features on albums by Cara Dillon and Caroline Herring.
