Seeing the videoclip, the corpulent councillor frowned, lifted a hand from his paunch and grapped his glass of wine: ‘You are making Black Mist,’ he declared. If he had not been so convincing, Sexton Creeps would still have been making psychedelic folk-rock. Apparently Black Mist is music along the line of Nick Cave, Calexico and the Velvet Underground, with highlights towards Sonic Youth; an atmospheric trip between melancholy, fear and hysteria.
The band-collective Sexton Creeps was founded by guitarist Steven Jouwersma and vocalist J.C. with the only goal to put something on record as soon as possible. With the help of guest-musicians they recorded the EP CAS in the summer of 2006. Jouke van der Krieke (the Swains) contributes with arrangements of violin and accordeon. For bass and slide-guitars they ask Arnold Nieborg (the Monroes/the Swains). He and J.C. collaberated earlier in the Cramps-coverband the Goo Goo Mucks. Bram Nigten is attrackted to play drums. This resulted in a collection of six ominous songs for a damp and chilly winterevening.
In 2007 de band is expanded with keyboardist Martine Rademakers and bassplayer/accordionist Jos Volkers, and Sexton Creeps reaches its full strength. They start working on new material and in a crowded and hazy VERA-bar (November 2007) Sexton Creeps makes its entry in the Groninger musicscene.
The new EP Songs For My Kaiserin was recorded by Klaas Pot (a.o. Adept) and will be presented in spring of 2009. On one of the songs singer-songwriter Klaske Oenema sings along. And due to the extensive set of instruments: organ, synthesizer, three guitars, violin, piano and accordion, the second product is contrastfull and rich of sound. The whole delivers a dark soundtrack for a misty, probably by David Lynch directed roadmovie.
