Shonben was a short-lived project featuring Scott and Graeme of the defunct UK punk heroes Broccoli, on guitar and drums respectively, and Janet (wife of Jawbox's J. Robbins and later a member of Channels) on bass.
The band only released a split 7" (with My Winter Jane) and contributed one track to a compilation before they disbanded, but the Welsh punk label Newest Industry deemed the band's unreleased demo good enough for release and collected those and the previously released tracks for a 2003 CD release, '1999'.
Shonben took the gruff melodic punk of Broccoli and tempered it with an introspective, indie-pop sensibility. This trend would continue with Scott's next band, Sedaced.
