I can only grit my teeth, sway, & hope to someday feel a fraction of the wonderful & strange sensations he did. His music must incorporate the golden ratio. Operatic drama by horn.

Newcomers to Bechet: try out Summertime and Indian Summer for his lyricism - and Maple Leaf Rag for his sheer drive. This latter track actually reflects what the bulk of his recorded playing was like.

It's good that the great Sidney is reasonably well represented in last.fm. Although he was overshadowed by Louis Armstrong, he was just as much a virtuoso on his soprano sax as Louis was on the cornet/trumpet. Louis had that extra layer of true genius and a much more equitable personaility. Sidney's career suffered from the fact that he was prone to pulling knives on people (he was temporarily jailed in London when he first came over around 1919) and he hated playing with people who might be capable of sharing his limelight. Despite all that, he played sublime music right through to his happy twilight years in France in the 1950s. (Incidentally, it's a shame that other sax/clarinet stars of Bechet's era - such as Mezzrow and Noone - hve virtually no tracks up on last.fm.)
