Released in the first quarter of 1985, "Don't You (Forget About Me)" was taken from the soundtrack to John Hughes's film, The Breakfast Club. The single became a major success for the band, hitting #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, #7 on the UK Official Charts, #4 on the German charts, and the top ten on several major markets. Billboard Magazine ranked "Don't You (Forget About Me)" as the 16th biggest single of 1985 in the U.S.

The song was also used in the prom scene of Hughes's 1986 film Pretty In Pink. While the scene was shot using this song, the track that was actually used was If You Leave by OMD. This may explain why the dancing in the scene doesn't follow the music. Speaking with Songfacts Andy McCluskey of OMD explained: "The song had to be 120 BPM cos that's the tempo of 'Don't You Forget about Me,' which is the track they actually shot the prom scene to. Unfortunately, the editor obviously had no sense of rhythm because they are all dancing out of time in the final film."

In 2013, actress Molly Ringwald recorded a cover of "Don't You (Forget About Me)" for her jazz album Except Sometimes
